7.3 Power-Assisted SteeringThis section covers the hydraulic portion of the power steering system, including the pump, the fluid reservoir and connecting hoses, and draining and filling the system. The mechanical part of the steering system is covered in 7.2 Steering Gear and Tie Rods. Information on tightening or replacing the V-belt is found in LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE. The power-assisted steering gear is available only as a complete assembly. Service of the steering gear, including repair of housing seal leaks, is by replacement only. The pump is engine-driven by a V-belt, and provides the hydraulic pressure which is used to assist the movement of the steering rack. Fluid is drawn from the reservoir and pressurized by the pump. Then, depending on the position of the spool valve in the steering gearbox, fluid is directed to either side of the work piston to help move the rack. Fluid which is not doing work flows back to the fluid reservoir through the return line. Fig. 7-15 is a schematic representation of the power-assisted steering system. The system components are shown in exploded view in Fig. 7-16.
