Removing and Installing Rear Wiper MotorFig. 8-6 is a view of the GTI and Golf rear hatch showing the rear wiper motor and linkage assembly. The rear wiper arm attaches to the wiper shaft in the same manner that the front wiper arms are attached.

To remove the motor, disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal and remove the interior hatch trim panel. Pry the relay rod from the drive crank, and then remove the drive crank mounting nut and the crank. Remove the motor bracket mounting bolts and partially remove the bracket so that the motor's harness connector can be disconnected. Remove the bracket and the motor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Completely install the motor and connect the battery, but do not connect the relay rods. Turn on the ignition and the wiper switch to run the motor for approximately one minute, then turn off the wiper switch. The motor will stop in its park position. Install the drive crank so that it is parallel to the bottom edge of the hatch, as shown in Fig. 8-6. Lubricate the ball pin with multipurpose grease, and install the relay rod. Mount the wiper arm on the shaft as shown in Fig. 8-7.
